Malaysia Building Society Berhad (MBSB) formerly named "Federal Building Society and Colonial Limited" was established in 1950. It changed its name in 1956 to "Malaya Borneo Building Society Limited" (MBBS), the Government of Malaysia being the major shareholder. MBBS has been listed on the Stock Exchange of Malaysia and Singapore in August 1963. As MBBS has continued to grow year by year it was listed on the Kuala Lumpur Stock exchange (now Bursa Malaysia) on March 14, 1972. The company changed its name again to Malaysia Building Society Berhad (MBSB) with a joint venture between Kumpulan Wang Simpanan Pekerja (KWSP/EPF) and Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB).
MBSB has expanded from its role as a financier for first property buyers to a financial provider that offers innovative products through a broad spectrum of services by its nationwide branch network. MBSB was established as a scheduled institution under the Banking and Financial Institutions Act 1989 (BAFIA). The status of "Exempt Status Finance Company" has been granted to MBSB on March 1, 1972 by the Ministry of Finance and remains until now. This allows MBSB to conduct financing business in the absence of a banking license. Amongst other MBSB products are corporate loans as well as real estate and housing/mortgage loans.
